FIREFIGHTER INJURED IN FAST-FOOD RESTAURANT FIRE – NEW YORK

ITHACA, N.Y. (WETM) — A Tuesday morning fire at the Wendy’s in Ithaca minorly injured a firefighter and caused the restaurant to close.

The Ithaca Fire Department stated that someone called 911 shortly before 6 a.m. on Feb. 11 to report that a deep fryer inside the Wendy’s restaurant on Elmira Road was on fire and the employees were evacuating the building. Authorities say the fire was freely burning and spreading past the fryer when firefighters arrived.

According to the fire department, it took fire crews about 30 minutes to extinguish the flames. The crews stayed at the scene of the fire for two hours to open concealed spaces and put out hot spots.

One firefighter received a minor injury while battling the fire. No other injuries were reported.

The Fire Department says that the interior of the restaurant sustained significant damage. The Wendy’s is currently closed.

The Ithaca Fire Department, the Ithaca Police Department, Bangs Ambulance, the City of Ithaca’s Water and Sewer Division, NYSEG, and the City of Ithaca’s Building Division responded to the scene. Off-duty Ithaca firefighters responded to the scene and covered additional calls. The Newfield Fire Company, the Lansing Fire Department, and the Cayuga Heights Fire Department also provided coverage.
