When is a firefighter free to speak their mind? When is a fire department free to discipline a firefighter for things they/we say? Although this issue crops up often as a result of social media postings,
it goes far beyond that as well.
I’ve personally tested the “freedom of speech” concept a few times in my career-and in almost all cases, I have no regrets. Sometimes you just have to speak up when things are wrong. I’ve also been around more than a few people in my career who do not have the so called courage to speak up-and that’s disappointing. Either way, it’s
rather helpful to understand the rules and the laws
before we start typing or running our mouths-right or wrong.
the question is:
When can we speak up?
How can we speak up?
Where can we speak up?
DO we have the right to “freedom of speech” or the “freedom to post” anytime-anywhere…or do we essentially have a
“behavioral rental agreement” with our fire departments-career or volunteer-for a certain kind of behavior (on and off duty) in exchange for us belonging to their organization?
Gordon (Graham) and I have discussed this many,
many times-with many of you, at programs such as FDIC. I’ve also discussed it with other fire service friends and attorneys, such as Chief Curt Varone-who writes the Fire Law Blog.
And we now wanna discuss it with you.
Join subject matter expert Curt Varone, Chief Fire Officer & Attorney, along with me for a
NO COST webinar sponsored by Lexipol. I promise you we will have a very engaging discussion on firefighter free speech and expression that will give you facts to help you determine what you do, say and act. Using real-world examples, we’ll shed a huge flood light on this divisive issue. We will also provide you with some practical tips for all ranks, from Firefighters to Chiefs…so you don’t forfeit your fire service membership, career and pension.
Odds are, each of you reading this know a firefighter who has been challenged by the issues of so called “free speech!” After all, our behavior in 2016-and in the future-as a firefighter, officer or chief may not be as FREE as we perceive it to be.
