If your department is supporting Firefighter cancer initiatives, especially this month and November (Movember) then do it-sure, wear the shirts and raise the funds but stop unnecessarily eating smoke. There’s no shortage of cancer inviting no-mask wearing firefighters on absolutely BS fires posting themselves on social media for whoever to see. This is absolutely a risky business – but some risks are not necessary and stupid.
The latest posting was a young Firefighter operating at a piece of sh!t small detached garage fire, the fire is out and lots of crap is smoldering, and he is literally eating it. A small detached garage filled with every “garage type” chemical burning creates zero hero opportunities.
IAFF urges this.
IAFC urges this.
NVFC urges this. They know what they are talking about.
FCSN lives it and NFFF memorilizes it.
TRY a little harder bosses-especially with the younger Firefighters who just “KNOW” they’ll never get cancer-until they find a lump, piss blood or go for a physical and the Doctor says “Please come to my office today-I need to talk to you.”
Love the job for as long as you can, but don’t be a dope. Everyone of us knows Firefighters who are dead, who are sick or who have had cancer. It’s 2022 and it is everywhere. At least make a f*cking effort. Bosses? Be Bosses not best friends when it comes to doing your job protecting Firefighters from themselves.
Take Care. Be Careful. Pass it On.
