FIREFIGHTER CLOSE CALL ON KY. HIGHWAY

Rick Markley    August 23, 2017    No Comments

On July 10, 2017 at approximately 14:10 we were clearing from a truck fire on Interstate 64 east-bound lane at mile marker 163 in Carter County, Kentucky.

The left lane was shut down due to the truck fire. The crew that was on Engine 1 for the Grayson Fire Department just got back in the truck so we could go back to the fire station and get the truck back in service. The drive of the fire truck was getting ready to put the truck in drive when he heard tires squealing coming from the back of the fire truck.

The drive looked in his mirror and saw a truck pulling a travel trailer coming at a high rate of speed right for the back of the fire truck. The driver of the oncoming truck jacked knifed the travel trailer and the truck did a 180 and hit the cable barrier. The travel trailer came about 15 feet from hitting the fire truck. The lady that was driving the truck said that she did not see the fire truck in the fast lane with the emergency light on.

Lessons Learned: Always be on guard; stuff can happen in a blink of an eye.
