FIRE APPARATUS RESPONDING CRASH IN UTAH

A Logan City Fire Department engine headed east on 100 West at the intersection of U.S. 89/91 was involved in a traffic collision Tuesday around 1:30 p.m.

According to Logan Fire Chief Nate Thompson, a car headed north failed to yield and hit the fire engine while crossing the intersection. The driver of the car was assessed at the scene and released.

The driver was the only person in the car. The firefighters were not injured.

Northbound traffic was redirected onto 100 W for about 20-30 minutes while the crash was assessed and the car was towed. The engine was able to drive away.

Thompson said the driver of the fire engine followed all of the department’s policies to account for traffic, stopped at the traffic light and proceeded slowly through the intersection.

He said southbound and northbound traffic had stopped, with the exception of the driver of the car.

According to Thompson, the driver saw the engine and tried to stop in time, but he was going at a high rate of speed and hit the engine hard.

“Driving is one of the most dangerous things we do, for sure,” Thompson said. “This year, our people in ambulances and engines, they have to be super, super cautious out there. People are in a hurry, and for whatever reason they don’t see us.”

Thompson said the crash is still under investigation
