A tip has been developed from FDNY training to discuss the roof rope rescues that occurred earlier today in Manhattan.

DETAILS:
Earlier today in Manhattan FDNY units (fire and EMS) operated heroically at a serious fire on the 20th floor of a high rise fireproof multiple dwelling. This fire which began near the entrance to the apartment quickly cut off the occupants only path of egress to escape. The required FDNY members to quickly initiate a life saving rope (LSR) rescue. A tactic of last resort in the FDNY.
• Two victims were lowered to safety on the LSR and a third was removed via the interior after the fire was controlled.
• In total – four firefighters were lowered using the LRS during this extreme effort.
• One of the victim’s arms was trapped by a window gate – this necessitated a firefighter to be lowered with a Halligan to free the victim.
• The LSR was secured across the apartment door on the floor above with a 6-foot hook.
• The LSR rescue was a well-coordinated team effort with support coming from inside, above the victim, adjacent to the victim, and below the victim.
• The interchangeability of our members with at least four companies working together is due to the dedication each of us have to knowing our job.
• This begins with knowing and understanding our procedures. FDNY procedures
fundamentally value the team over the individual – with the individual expected to
execute assigned tasks as an integral part of the team.

• Our deep bench of well-trained firefighters enables each of us to rely on one another with the understanding of the importance of the sum of the team. It is being ready to perform when you are called upon.
• Prepare for the possible – because on game day, the time to prepare has passed.
• It is our winning mindset. Today was another example of this undeniable truth.
