On Sunday August 27, 2006, Lt. Howard Carpluk Jr., Engine 42 (working in Engine 75), and Probationary Firefighter Michael Reilly, Engine 75, made the supreme sacrifice while operating at Bronx Box 3-3-2797. The fire was in a 99-cent store, in a 1-story taxpayer at 1575 Walton Avenue in the Bronx.
While members were operating on the first floor a V-shaped collapse of the first floor and the roof occurred, hurling several firefighters into the cellar. The collapse occurred 21 minutes into operations. Lt. Carpluk and Firefighter Reilly became trapped under tons of debris and store merchandise. Sadly, both members succumbed to their injuries.
As a result of this tragedy changes were made to the MAYDAY procedures. In honor and remembrance of Lt. Carpluk and FF Reilly we present the following points as shared by the FDNY Fire Academy this morning. Another opportunity to honor by learning:
Take Care. Be Careful. Pass It On.
