As Father’s Day approaches, we remember the many Firefighters who lost their lives on and around Father’s Day. These are just a few of the multi-LODD losses.
====The Boston Hotel Vendome fire was the worst firefighting tragedy in Boston history. 9 Boston Firefighters were killed when part of the building collapsed, June 17, 1972.
The fire was brought largely under control by 4:30pm. Several crews, including Boston Ladder 13 and Engines 22 and 32, remained on scene performing overhaul and cleanup. At 5:28pm, abruptly and without warning, all five floors of a 40 by 45 foot section at the southeast
the corner of the building collapsed, burying a ladder truck and 17 firefighters beneath a two-story pile of debris.
Occurring one day prior to Father’s Day, 8 Firefighters were injured, and 9 Firefighters lost their lives in the worst firefighting disaster in Boston history. The men who were killed were: Firefighter Thomas W. Beckwith, Firefighter Joseph E. Boucher, Lieutenant Thomas J. Carroll,
Firefighter Charles E. Dolan, Lieutenant John E. Hanbury, Jr.,Firefighter John E. Jameson, Firefighter Richard B. Magee, Firefighter Paul J. Murphy and Firefighter Joseph P. Saniuk.

More recently, younger Firefighters (hopefully) know of the FATHER’S DAY FIRE in the FDNY –
The 2001 Father’s Day Fire in the Queens. 3 Firefighters were killed after and explosion trapped them in a collapse. They were Firefighter Brian Fahey, Firefighter Harry Ford, and Firefighter John Downing.

====RAVENSWOOD WEST VIRGINIA: (JUNE 17, 1990)
2 Firefighters were killed 1990. Peter Baltic and Curtis McClain were killed at the Ravenswood Aluminum Company while attempting a RESCUE of people overcome by a HALON fire extinguishing agent discharge. (If any readers have any details on this LODD, lemme know please)
