One person was killed this morning (Sunday) after the vehicle they were riding in struck the back of a Reece City (Alabama) Fire Department apparatus operating/blocking an earlier crash on I-59.
Firefighters were called at 0730 hours to the single-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-59 near mile marker 195, six miles north of Gadsden, AL. Fire apparatus blocked the left lane of the interstate to divert traffic into the right lane when two cars were seen by on scene members approaching the crash scene at a high rate of speed. The first car swerved into the right lane but the second vehicle that was carrying four people, was not able to avoid striking the back of one of the fire apparatus. Alabama Highway Patrol confirmed a passenger was killed, the others were transported. No Firefighters were injured.
