FATAL APPARATUS CRASH – WITCHITA, KANSAS

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) — Police say a 79-year-old man has died after crashing into a fire truck that was responding to an emergency call on Tuesday morning.

The crash happened around 8:50 a.m. at the intersection of Lincoln and Greenwich. Wichita Police Department spokesperson Capt. Aaron Moses said a WFD engine was traveling northbound on Greenwich with its lights and sirens activated while responding to a difficulty breathing call. A Honda CR-V was heading west on Lincoln, and the driver attempted to turn left onto Greenwich. The fire engine then struck the CR-V’s driver’s side.

Moses said the vehicles left the roadway and struck a Dodge Ram pickup.

The man driving the CR-V, James Mattson of Wichita, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Four firefighters on the engine and the pickup driver were uninjured.

“The WPD Critical Accident Team has been activated and is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash,” the Wichita Police Department said in a release. “WPD is the lead investigating agency, with assistance from the Kansas Highway Patrol.”

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the crash who has not yet spoken with investigators is encouraged to call 316-350-3689.
