FDNY was reportedly operating at a fire around 1530 this afternoon at a barge at a shipyard on Staten Island. The fire grew to 2 alarms and there are reports the members were searching for trapped civilians when an explosion occurred at around 1620 hours.
Initial reports are that two civilian workers were painting a vessel-FDNY received the initial call reporting workers trapped in a confined space in the dry dock.
Companies arrived and found a fire in the basement of a 150-by-150-foot metal structure at the rear of the shipping docks. A second alarm was transmitted just after 1600 hours and the explosion followed 11 minutes later.
The total count of victims is currently 16:
- 1 civilian was seriously injured
- 2 Firefighters were seriously injured
- 2 Firefighters were moderately injured
- 9 Firefighters were injured/minor
- 2 EMS members were injured/minor
