All,
In a rare situation, an unknown caused explosion occurred at the Long Beach (Calif) Fire Department training facility yesterday that left several personnel with minor injuries.
As coordinated fireground training operations began, an unexpected explosion occurred in the basement of their training tower. The explosion broke windows and caused minor damage throughout the structure. All personnel involved in the training evolution were evacuated from the structure and quickly accounted for. Initially, 11 personnel reported minor complaints and injuries with one taken to a hospital for treatment. The training center is closed while an investigation is conducted.

BLACK FIRE VIDEO
I remember when I went through the fire academy in the early 70’s, the instructor (Chief Nelson Finkleman-Nassau County) made it very clear that you NEVER open the line until you see fire. How times have changed. Check the below training information and video out from FDNY Training:
Yesterday, Bronx units operated at a second alarm fire on the 7th floor of an 18-story high-rise multiple dwelling. Units experienced the phenomenon of Black Fire. This is a condition when thick, turbulent superheated fuel rich black smoke, that has been heated well beyond its ignition point, is so rich with gasses it is beyond its flammable range and is too rich to burn. You are encouraged to view the video of the initial attack provided below.
• This was a wind impacted fire – fire creates pressure – once the door was opened to the apartment, pressure equalization occurred – this is the initial burst of smoke observed in the video.
• The apartment door is opened and the hoseline is making an aggressive push into the apartment to extinguish fire. The hoseline was opened on the Black Fire.
• The open breezeway construction of this building allows us to visualize the tremendous amount of smoke generated from what is burning in today’s modern plastic-based consumables.
