There’s a Lexipol webinar next week that we wanted to pass on to you.
WHAT: Lexipol Webinar
“We Don’t Have a Race Problem”
Confronting Racial Inequity in the Fire Service
WHEN: Tuesday, March 2, 1300 hours Eastern
(1000 hours Pacific) – No Cost
The claims of the “need for greater diversity in the fire service” has been a topic of discussion for a long time. Some like having the discussion, some don’t -and some aren’t even sure what the issue is-if there is one.
And then there is the concept of racial justice and equity in the fire service. As a result, “diversity” gets pigeonholed as a recruitment problem. Is it a fire service issue or is it more than that? And why does it seem the fire service is being pushed to diversify when those who dial 911 probably don’t care about who arrives on the fire apparatus-as long as they arrive?
So then, is there a problem? And if there is, can the fire service solve the problem? Is it a local issue? How does it impact “your” fire department. Why is it so tough in some departments-and others it just doesn’t seem to be? Some claim lack of diversity in a fire department is actually a firefighter safety issue, as it can erode internal (FD)-as well as community trust.
Some claim it’s a fire house problem and others see it differently-as being much bigger than just us. Either way-it IS a discussion worth having-and that’s what we are gonna do.
TO BE CLEAR: this webinar will feature a very candid discussion on racial inequity in the fire service. The bulk of the presentation will be driven by audience questions. The below presenters will share their experiences- as well as solutions.
NOTE: Lexipol is taking registrant questions up front and using those to drive the content of the webinar – so this will be a unique opportunity for folks to ask questions and hear from a distinguished panel and a no BS discussion.
