Drunk man spat blood into mouth of PC after attacking paramedic – UK

A MAN threw punches at a paramedic before spitting blood in a policeman’s mouth.

Wayne Gibbs, 25, attacked bewildered ambulance driver Kevin Chilvers, who had been sent to help him, just before midnight on December 23.

Mr Chilvers was called to High Street in West Malling after Gibbs was beaten up and left with blood dripping from his face.

But Gibbs refused to be treated and instead punched the ambulance door, before trying to pull Mr Chilvers out from his seat.

Luckily the paramedic had his seat belt on.

Gibbs then threw a punch at him, but it missed.

Police were called and Gibbs, who was now sitting on a nearby bench, became aggressive again and spat at PC Phillip Comben.

A small piece of saliva, mixed with the blood which was dripping down his face, went into the policeman’s mouth.

Gibbs, of Woodlands Road, Ditton, pleaded guilty to the charges of assaulting a police constable and common assault at a hearing at Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday. A further charge of assaulting PC Chloe Youngs was withdrawn.

Sacha Alexander, defending, said: "He’s deeply ashamed, disappointed and embarrassed but the truth is he has no recollection of what happened that night.

"He went out with work colleagues and, having not drunk for a long period, drank a lot."

Chairman of the bench Fiona Leathers said: "You assaulted a paramedic and a police officer. It was very alarming to the paramedic and very unpleasant to the police officer."

South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Trust’s local security management specialist David Dixon said after the hearing: "We are pleased this case was able to come to a successful conclusion in court.

"We take any violence or abusive behaviour against our staff extremely seriously.

"Ambulance staff deserve to be able to serve their local communities in safety."

Insp Max Holway at Kent Police added: "Unfortunately this type of attack on police officers, and other members of the emergency services, is not unusual.

"Our officers have to face behaviour like this on a daily basis."

Gibbs returns to court on February 8 for sentencing.

He was granted unconditional bail.
