Driver charged in ambulance accident – Virginia

Ambulance was responding to emergency call

Virginia Beach Police have charged the driver they say hit an ambulance just after 10:00 a.m. Thurday with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Police say the ambulance was responding to an overdose call when the accident occurred in the intersection of South Rosemount Road and Lynnhaven Parkway.

Bruce Nedelka with Virginia Beach EMS said the ambulance was going through the intersection with lights on and sirens blasting. All other traffic in the intersection stopped, but the driver of a van continued through the intersection slamming into the passenger side door of the ambulance.

Nedelka said the volunteer EMT on the passenger side of the ambulance suffered minor injuries, and was transported to the hospital via a separate ambulance.

The EMT has since been treated and released.

The driver of the van was not injured.

Police say when the accident happened the 911 bureau dispatched another ambulance to the original overdose call.
