A drag race resulted in major damage to a fire station in Manatee County (Florida, near Bradenton) fire station around 0600 this morning. While the driver was left with critical injuries, the Firefighters in quarters were uninjured. Southern Manatee Fire District station 5 (on Honore Avenue, Bradenton) was seriously damaged after one of the cars “flew” after hitting a curb, taking off an estimated 180′, clipping off the top of a palm tree and landing in the fire stations day room area-just feet from the dorm, where most of the members were. The members immediately started treating the drag racer. The other car reportedly struck the “yellow flashing light” in front of quarters but then left the scene. NOTE the palm tree….
