All,
Downed power lines are a fairly high-frequency event for most fire departments. In nearly, if not every, case, the risk should be minimal: size it up by distance, isolate/secure the area from civilians, police, and our personnel, identify any immediate exposures, and wait for the power company. Electricity is some very nasty stuff.
Unfortunately, there have been Firefighters critically injured and/or killed in the Line of Duty. Google “firefighter killed by power line,” as well as NIOSH reports, to read about some of those terrible events.
Thankfully, there were no injuries in the case below that was sent to us at FireFighter Close Calls, but the video and information are valuable for training purposes, and it appears the reporter may have some understanding of firefighting.
This is an excellent opportunity to train and learn, and to ensure each of our members understands what we expect them to do and not do (policies/operating procedures) on this type of incident, and why.
Take Care. Be Careful. Pass It On.
