Yesterday there was a crash involving an East Brunswick (central NJ) Fire Department chiefs vehicle that tragically left a South River couple dead. A preliminary investigation indicates the fatal crash Sunday evening involved the Fire Chiefs vehicle (with lights/siren activated) and a vehicle which contained the couple, a man and his wife.The crash occurred around 1930 hours on Old Ridge Turnpike.
The Chief of EBFD #1, whose name was not released, has been placed on administrative leave. The South River couple was rescued, treated and were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where they were pronounced dead.
The county prosecutors office stated that the mandatory timely notification of the crash was not made by the East Brunswick PD to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, which is now examining the circumstances surrounding the crash. Apparently a Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office directive requires law enforcement agencies to immediately notify the prosecutor’s office of all motor vehicle crashes resulting in death or severe bodily injuries that are likely to be the imminent cause of death.
