People dial 9-1-1 and expect us 5 minutes ago. That’s a normal reaction…but there is almost always more to the story.
This fire was started by children and burned a house to the ground, heavily burning a neighboring home…AND… the residents reportedly spent 10-15 minutes attempting to put the fire out before calling 911, according to the chief.
QUICK THOUGHTS:
Forget this fire specifically. These comments are not specific to this run or FD’s involved.
However (and this is why we are sharing this video) the next time someone you know wants to cut needed staffing, ignore dispatch needs / call handling times, don’t want to staff firehouses, fight against residential fire sprinklers…stuff like that– you may find this video helpful in helping them more clearly understand rapid notification, fire spread, time, distance and measurably needed FIRE FIGHTING resources… just a little bit better.
And if that doesn’t work, the crying kids in the video may help. It’s a real dose of reality for those who don’t want to understand this job-and the public need.
