COLORADO SPRINGS LEADERS ANNOUNCE CITY SPECIFIC 911 AUTHORITY PROPOSAL

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Colorado Springs officials announced plans Monday to create a city-specific 911 authority, a move leaders say would keep emergency communications funding generated within the city focused on local public safety needs.

Mayor Yemi Mobolade, Police Chief Adrian Vasquez, Fire Chief Randy Royal and other city leaders unveiled the plan during a news conference.

Officials say residents would not see changes in how they call 911 or receive emergency services. Instead, the proposed shift focuses on how 911-funding is used.

Most Colorado residents already pay a monthly emergency telephone surcharge through their phone service provider. Those fees help fund emergency communications and 911 operations.

Currently, Colorado Springs is part of the El Paso-Teller County 911 Authority (EPTC-911), a regional organization that collects emergency telephone surcharge fees and distributes funding throughout El Paso and Teller counties. The authority also provides community alerting services, public education programs and other regional support functions.

Starting in 2027, Colorado Springs plans to leave the regional authority and establish its own standalone 911 authority while continuing to coordinate with regional partners.

Fire Chief Randy Royal said the change is intended to improve service delivery and position the city for growth.

“This will allow our delivery services to be more efficient, leverage technology into the future, and maximize the value of our taxpayer dollars,” Royal said.

EPTC-911 released a brief statement Monday, saying it had no immediate comments on the proposal and was informed of the plan shortly before Colorado Springs leaders made the announcement publicly. EPTC-911 leaders say they plan to discuss the matter at their upcoming board meeting on Wednesday.

The change would also bring Colorado Springs in line with several other Colorado cities, including Denver and Aurora, which operate their own 911 authorities.

The proposal would need city council’s approval in order to move forward.
