A LOUT involved in a menacing attack on Colac emergency workers as they tried to rescue a seriously injured woman trapped in a car has been jailed.
Magistrate Ian von Einem this week sentenced Brendan Pallant, of Rosella Ave, Werribee, to 14 months jail with a non-parole period of six months.
Mr von Einem also adjourned an application for bail to appeal until July 18, saying Pallant still had matters pending at another court and had already breached two orders by his latest offending.
"You have been given every opportunity to rehabilitate and I believe you are at risk of re-offending if released," Mr von Einem said.
During a three-day contested hearing, Pallant pleaded not guilty to 27 charges, including riotous assembly, unlawful assault, assault in company, threatening serious injury, assault police, hindering police, hindering emergency staff (ambulance) and hindering emergency services.
The charges stemmed from an incident following a boozy ‘Bathurst’ barbecue at Colac on October 11, 2009.
Geelong Court was told that during the evening Pallant and two co-offenders attended the scene of a serious car crash involving three females from the same party.
The trio then went on a rampage creating havoc, abusing, threatening and hindering emergency staff trying to carry out their duties.
Mr von Einem found the charges against Pallant proved, with five lesser charges withdrawn by the prosecution yesterday.
Handing down sentence, Mr von Einem said Pallant had assaulted and hindered emergency personnel, including police, SES and CFA volunteers and had threatened to inflict serious injury on one paramedic.
"Emergency services volunteers are hard to find and give up their time to protect the community," he said.
"It is difficult to comprehend your behaviour."
Mr von Einem said Pallant was given a suspended sentence for robbery just three months before the offending and was also facing the breach of an Intensive Corrections Order.
Pallant will return to Geelong Magistrates’ Court on July 18.
