It’s very cool to see so many small regional fire conferences going on these days. I’m not sure what spurred it, but the more training by those qualified to train-the better.
I say that because you wanna make sure those who are doing the instructing are doing what should be instructed-based upon standards, best practices and your own departments policies.
By far most of the programs out there are solid with reputable instructors-but just be sure prior to setting up or taking a class on, for example, high rise firefighting by someone who has never fought-or commanded a hi rise fire. Or a command and operations class by someone who doesn’t operate in a command role at their won department. Or someone who is not allowed to instruct for their own agency-but is teaching yours. Things like that. There’s no reason why your agency shouldn’t check out who is training your people-no different than, for example the crew at FDIC does. A significant vetting process is done at FDIC to make sure those who are instructing have the experience and qualifications to do so. Your local programs shouldn’t be any different.
