Investigators are looking into whether an attack that killed several Marines in Afghanistan in 2019, including FDNY & Kentland (Maryland) Firefighter Christopher Slutman, was related to Russian bounties. Slutman, who lived in NY and also near Wilmington with his wife and three daughters, was a staff sergeant with the U.S. Marines Corps Reserve when he was killed on April 8, 2019, in a bombing attack. He was also a decorated New York City firefighter.
Top officials in the White House were aware in early 2019 of classified intelligence indicating Russia was secretly offering bounties to the Taliban for the deaths of Americans, a full year earlier than has been previously reported, according to U.S. officials with direct knowledge of the intelligence.
U.S. officials are focused on an April 2019 attack on an American convoy. Three U.S. Marines were killed after a car rigged with explosives detonated near their armored vehicles as they returned to Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military installation in Afghanistan. The Defense Department identified them as Marine Staff Sgt. Slutman, 43, of the Wilmington area; Sgt. Benjamin Hines, 31, of York, Pennsylvania; and Cpl. Robert Hendriks, 25, of Locust Valley, New York. They were infantrymen assigned to 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines, a reserve infantry unit headquartered out of Garden City, New York.
Slutman grew up in Maryland, where his father, Fletcher Slutman Jr., had worked as a Firefighter. He wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps, and went to New York to do it. There he excelled, and in 2014 was honored for rescuing an unconscious woman from the seventh floor of a high-rise apartment building. While he had a place in New York, to comply with the residency requirement for firefighters, he commuted to Delaware, where his wife Shannon and three young daughters lived.
Our sincere hope is that the FACTS come out in this horrible allegation.
