At around 4:00 p.m. Monday, the Rincon Police Department was called on by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office to help with a two-car accident involving two people who ran away from law enforcement. Police say one suspect ran towards Goshen Road and another ran to McCall Road.
Officers said that while they headed towards McCall Road, they were told that an ambulance had been stolen.
Rincon officers then chased the ambulance for several miles into Port Wentworth. During this chase, police say the driver intentionally hit a Rincon police vehicle which caused the police vehicle to hit another vehicle- which resulted in minor injuries.
Rincon Police said they tried an unsuccessful PIT maneuver. At the same time, Port Wentworth officers were putting out spike strips to try to safely end this dangerous situation.
The ambulance eventually lost control and crashed into a ditch near Saussy Road and Highway 21.
Police say both suspects have been caught and taken to the Effingham County Jail.
The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspects as Dwayne Simmons, who they say was the ambulance driver and Georgell Brown, who they say was the other person involved in the initial McCall Road crash.
