An ambulance driver has been cited for careless driving following a two-vehicle crash Thursday in the Cardiff section of Egg Harbor Township.
A Ford pickup operated by Daniel Payne, 36, of Galloway, was struck by an Egg Harbor Township Ambulance Squad ambulance at the intersection of Fernwood and West Jersey avenues at about 9:05 a.m.
Police said an ambulance operated by Frank Carlin, 37, of Egg Harbor Township, was responding to an emergency call of a subject unconscious and not breathing at the time it struck Payne’s vehicle. The ambulance had its emergency lights and siren activated and was attempting to cross West Jersey Avenue.
The impact caused both vehicles to leave the roadway into a wooded lot, where the ambulance rolled onto its side.
Both Carlin and another Ambulance Squad employee, Storm Allen, 21, of Mays Landing, were treated at the scene by the EHT Ambulance Squad and transported to AtlantiCare Mainland Campus with minor injuries. Payne refused treatment at the scene.
Police issued Carlin a summons for careless driving.
Traffic was detoured for approximately two and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
