Two Vancouver Island paramedics escaped injury when their ambulance collided with a train Sunday night.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Station Road and Jacklin Road in Langford, west of Victoria, shortly before 8 p.m. as the ambulance was responding to a call with lights and sirens on.

There was no patient inside the vehicle.

The E&N Dayliner’s train-warning system at the intersection was on at the time of the crash. But it’s believed that the blinding glare of the sun interfered with the ambulance driver’s ability to see the signal.

The driver was able to correct his actions at the last moment in order to avoid a more serious crash.

The train was reported to have no damage and was allowed to continue its trip a short time later. The ambulance sustained enough damage that it had to be towed from the scene.

No one aboard the train or in the ambulance was injured.

An investigation is under way.
