Tuscaloosa Firefighter and Paramedic, Chais Billings is battling COVID-19 at the DCH intensive care unit. Billings was diagnosed with COVID-19 over a week ago and is experiencing severe symptoms.
The firefighter is currently on oxygen and receiving Remdesivir treatments. Billings family members are keeping the public informed on his condition through Facebook.
“For something like this to hit him so hard, its heartbreaking, and I wish I could be there with him,” said Amanda Billings, Chais’ wife.
According to Amanda, Chais is a very strong individual who followed the COVID-19 safety guidelines. He’s a very active person who prides himself in helping others and serving as a Sergeant in the Army National Guard. Chais’ mother, Renee Howell, says seeing him in the hospital is concerning for the whole family.
“The worst thing is not being able to touch him and to talk to him because it takes a lot of air for him to talk, so it’s been difficult,” Howell said.
Family members say community support has kept them going through Chais’ hospitalization.
“It’s been so nice to see his fire family, and military family, and the whole city just come together and back him to try to support and encourage him,” Amanda said.
