The sheriff’s office tells WIS News 10 the backup was the result of an accident in the eastbound lane at exit 76 for Newberry’s Main Street at around 6:30pm.

Sheriff Lee Foster says a landscaping pickup truck hauling a large trailer collided with a Newberry County EMS ambulance with a patient and two paramedics onboard.

Lance Corporal Josef Robinson says a third car was involved but did not stop after the wreck. But because Robinson says the car did not make contact with either of the other vehicles, authorities aren’t considering the wreck a hit-and-run.

Foster says the patient in the ambulance was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital, and the two paramedics were taken to Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

The conditions of all three victims are unknown, but Robinson says none of the injuries sustained in the crash were life-threatening
