Four people — including a firefighter — were taken to the hospital, officials said, as crews worked to extinguish a house fire in New Castle, Delaware on Tuesday morning.
According to officials, fire crews arrived at the home along the 100 block of Parma Avenue in New Castle, Del. at about 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
During the response to the fire, four people — three residents and one firefighter — were injured and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The firefighter injured has been identified as a volunteer for the Minquadale Fire Company, officials said. The man injured his leg after it fell through the floor of the townhouse and had to be pulled out.
Firefighters also said that their response was hindered by icy roads and piles of snow that are a result of the deep freeze that has engulfed the region.
“The main roads are open, but the secondary roads in the neighborhoods are still pretty bad,” said Chief Matt Netsch of the Minquadale Fire Company. “Most of the roads in our response area are not plowed, so it causes delayed efforts getting in and operating safely in these neighborhoods.”
Neighbors also said they awoke to the fire and said it was chaotic to try to move their cars to allow for firefighters to get near the fire amid the snow.
