MILWAUKEE — On a snowy Thursday night, Milwaukee police rolled up on a hit-and-run crash, likely unaware the victim was a first responder himself.
Police said a speeding pick-up truck heading northbound on busy North 76th Street slammed into a car trying to cross the street going eastbound on Glendale Avenue in Milwaukee.
The medical examiner identified the victim in the car as 34-year-old Meng Kue. His family told WISN 12 News that Kue was an EMT at Bell Ambulance and was on his way home from work when the crash occurred.
“As soon as I sat down, that’s when I heard the two, two, three ‘booms,'” Ree, who lives nearby, said Friday.
Ree snapped some pictures of the crash aftermath. A closer look shows the crunched truck still on scene, but its driver was nowhere to be found.
“I saw a guy leaving going west. He came from over that way. I don’t know if he was involved. I saw a guy, he went west on Glendale,” Ree said. “He was walking, walking really fast.”
Police said Kue died on scene.
Investigators are still searching for the driver involved in the hit-and-run.
Neighbors in the area have expressed frustration with the speeding and reckless driving on North 76th Street, as Kue’s family mourns their loss.
“I’m just as speechless as they are. I mean, we can all say the same: our condolences, sorry. Sad that it happened. It’s not bringing their loved one back,” neighbor A.D. Sanders said.
Bell Ambulance acknowledged the loss in a social media post, stating that Kue’s death leaves a void in their hearts.
This incident marks the second deadly crash in the area in three months, following a motorcyclist’s death in October.
