A new law in Texas aims to strengthen mental health support for firefighters as the state confronts rising numbers of firefighter suicides.
KVUE reports the new law that went in to effect September 1 requires the Texas Commission on Fire Protection to create an advisory committee to study suicide prevention and peer support programs across fire departments statewide.
The measure follows losses like that of Cedar Park firefighter Cory Flores, who died by suicide nearly a year ago. His friend and fellow firefighter Jonathan Perez says the tragedy underscores the emotional toll of the job and the urgent need for more resources.
The 11-member advisory panel will be made up of firefighters, mental health experts, and fire service leaders. It’s goal is to assess existing programs, identify gaps, and recommend new training and legislative action to better support firefighters’ mental health. A final report is due to lawmakers next September.
