JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) -A man faces multiple charges, including driving while intoxicated, after police said he crashed into an ambulance then drove away.
On July 18, Jonesboro police responded to a hit-and-run crash involving an ambulance transporting a patient.
The driver reportedly told officers they were traveling north around the curve of Cottage Home when a southbound vehicle hit them, forcing the ambulance off the road.
Investigators determined the damage, which ran from the driver’s door to the back of the ambulance, was caused by a lighter gray or white vehicle.
According to the affidavit, an officer responding to the scene saw a white vehicle with “heavy damage to the front driver’s side” driving with its hazard lights on and stopped it.
When the officer contacted the driver, 23-year-old Drew Langston Qualls, he reported seeing the “front steering wheel air bag had been deployed, as well as the one down by his feet.”
“Qualls denied hitting the ambulance but stated that something ran out in front of him and he hit it,” the court documents stated. “The officer advised that Qualls was slurring his words, had bloodshot eyes, and was having trouble getting the door open.”
After a trip to a local hospital for evaluation, an officer took Qualls to the Craighead County Detention Center and booked in on the following charges:
- Leaving the scene of an accident with property damager greater than $10,000
- Driving while intoxicated
- Refusal to submit
- Expired vehicle license
On Monday, July 21, Craighead County District Court Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause to charge Qualls and set his bond at $25,000 cash/surety.
Qualls is scheduled to appear in circuit court on Sept. 30.
