Firefighter occupational cancer is the #1 cause of death for all Firefighters-active and retired, career and volunteer.
While we try to share these losses when we can, some we don’t know about, often we are sent the info, and some stun us. This loss is the last two: it was sent to us (to share), and we are stunned.
-This Fire Lieutenant was diagnosed with Leukemia less than 4 weeks ago.
-He was 43 years old.
-He was a member of the Baltimore County FD for 12 years.
We regret to pass on that Baltimore County Fire Department Fire Lieutenant Raymond Vargas Jr., died in the Line of Duty* on March 27, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Throughout his career, Lieutenant Vargas served with honor as a skilled Firefighter-EMT and as a mentor and friend to many. His impact on the department and those privileged to work alongside him remains profound, and they deeply feel his loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lieutenant Vargas’ family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
Ray is survived by his wife, Caroline Vargas, and their son, Gavin Vargas along with a very large family and countless friends.

43 years old. Fallen after 4 weeks of diagnosis.
There cannot be ONE of us reading this about Lt Vargas, not thinking, reflecting and praying. Praying for his department, his friends, and especially his family. Reflecting on our own exposures and immortality. And THINKING about what more we can each do to minimize the well-known risks of Firefighter Occupational Cancer. Personally, what we can each do for ourselves? And what those of you who are bosses do to set the example and what we will not tolerate or accept.
There is NO GUARANTEED way Firefighters can eliminate the risk-the cancer cancer-causing sh!t is everywhere. But be it masking up, cleaning up, getting checked, and all the stuff you already know, “our” cancer can be reduced.
This is one of several recent Firefighter cancer-related LODDs where the member was gone so quickly. Condolences to everyone affected by the stunning loss of Lt Vargas.

*Under Maryland’s Occupational Disease Presumption in workers’ compensation law, Lieutenant Vargas’ passing is classified as a Line of Duty Death. This presumption acknowledges the increased risk of certain cancers faced by firefighters due to repeated exposure to toxic substances encountered in the line of duty.
Take Care. Be Careful. Pass it On.
