CHICAGO — Three people were taken to the hospital early Saturday morning after a crash along the Eisenhower Expressway involving a CFD fire truck that was responding to a different crash on the same road.
According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), the incidents unfolded around 4 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 290 near South Kostner Avenue in Garfield Park.
Troopers were initially called to the scene following a report of a single-vehicle crash in the area. Authorities said the driver had allegedly been traveling the wrong way along I-290 when the vehicle veered off the road and overturned before coming to rest on the CTA tracks nearby.
Troopers said the driver and passenger of the vehicle were later taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
While crews were on the scene, another vehicle, a black Jeep, ended up striking three more vehicles in the area, including a CFD fire truck that was assisting in shutting down lanes and had its emergency lights activated.
Troopers said the driver of the Jeep was taken to the hospital with minor injuries following the crash. Other minor injuries were reported as well, but no CFD personnel was hurt.
Currently, it is unclear what led to the second crash and investigations are currently underway.
