CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Charleston Fire Department says one of their downtown stations will remain temporarily closed after the discovery on an unknown smell on March 3.
CFD says the station in question is the home of Engine 102, Engine 103 and Battalion 103 that is located at the corner of Wentworth Street and Meeting Street.
The City of Charleston Parks Department says they have coordinated with environmental contractor SM&E to conduct an air quality survey.
The CFD says the testing was initiated on Tuesday and the contractor has provided information from a preliminary lab report on four of the five gases that were sampled. The preliminary information on these four gases indicated that no detectable amounts of any gases were identified.
The fifth gas sample required a different testing process and the CFD says the results may not be returned until the following Tuesday.
“I appreciate the understanding and cooperation demonstrated by our team as we work through this situation,” CFD Fire Chief Dan Curia said. “Their health and safety is our number one concern as we strive to maintain service within our community.”
In the interest of safety, the CFD says all members of this station will remain at their alternate locations until additional verification can be made to exclude any potential hazard.
Team members on Engine 102 and Engine 103 will continue to operate from the Gaillard Center to remain within their primary response district and minimize impacts to response time, the CFD says.
