DRUNK DRIVER CRASHES INTO AMBULANCE – MASSACHUSETTS

HINGHAM, Mass. – A Hingham man is facing his fourth drunk driving charge after police said he crashed into an ambulance Thursday evening and fled the scene.

Police said they were investigating a separate crash involving another alleged drunk driver around 6:30 p.m. when a car crossed the center line along Derby Street into oncoming traffic and hit the parked ambulance.

Police said it appeared as though the car was trying to turn left in front of the ambulance when it was struck.

The ambulance, which has its emergency lights on, received minor damage.

A police officer at the scene helped the vehicle back off the ambulance, and when it started to move forward the officer told the driver to pull over.

The driver, who has been identified as Christopher M. Ayer, 53, of Hingham, instead continued driving and was eventually spotted in the driveway of his home.

Ayer was arrested after failing a field sobriety test.

He was charged with OUI, operating to endanger, leaving the scene after causing property damage, failure to stop for a police officer and failure to use care when turning.

He was arraigned in court Friday and was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Monday.
