Brighton Police ticket the driver of the Rural Metro ambulance for the crash that killed an 82-year-old patient in the back. Police say there were no "contributing factors" like alcohol or drugs to cause them to file more charges.
Police say Melissa Onderdonk, the ambulance driver, pulled out in front of a car and caused the accident. The ambulance was heading north on Winton Road, turning left to get onto I-590. The car, driven by 84-year-old Edith Warner, was heading south on Winton Rd.
82-year-old Erwin Leonard was in the ambulance on his way to Highland Hospital. He had fallen at his home in the Jewish Home.
Brighton PD say Leonard was being taken in "non-emergency" mode. The ambulance was not running its lights and sirens.
Onderdonk and her Rural Metro partner, Dennis Paone, Jr., went to Strong Hospital with only minor injuries.
They have both been released.
Warner and her passenger, 98-year-old Abe Levitt also went to Strong. They are still in satisfactory condition.
We contacted the Leonard family today and they declined to talk to us.
The Medical Examiner’s office does not have an official cause of death at this time. We will check in later today.
