The emergency vehicle and a black Honda Civic collided at 6.15am on Hailsham Road, near the crossroads at the Prince of Wales pub.
The ambulance had been on its way to an emergency call in the Heathfield area at the time of the accident.
Fire crews and police rushed to the scene and the road was closed to rush hour and school run traffic.
