An accident between a Rural Metro Ambulance and a car Thursday evening at the intersection of 41st Street and Shirley Avenue sent at least one person to the hospital.
Sgt. Jim Severson with the Sioux Falls Police Department said law enforcement were still trying to determine how the accident occurred Thursday night, but said it appeared the ambulance was traveling westbound when it struck a black Pontiac Grand Am with Minnesota license plates that was likely going southbound on Shirley Avenue.
Four people – two adults and two children – were in the Grand Am. The extent of the injuries wasn’t immediately known, but the man driving the car had to be extricated. Names weren’t immediately released.
Nick Roach of Sioux Falls was eating in the Arby’s parking lot nearby when he heard the crash and walked toward the sound to investigate.
Roach said when he got to the car, there was a baby in the backseat and a 10-year-old boy. He said a woman in the passenger seat, who was visibly injured, asked him to remove the boy from the car, which he did. He then let the boy use his cell phone to call other family members.
Severson said he did not know if the ambulance was carrying a patient at the time of the crash. He said the ambulance crew appeared to be unharmed.
