UPDATE: ALABAMA FIRE CHIEF CONDITION IMPROVING

Fire Chief Brad Cox has been downgraded to serious condition at USA Medical Center.

8:50 a.m. Dauphin Island Police Department has confirmed Dauphin Island’s fire chief and two firefighters were injured while battling a blaze on Barcelona Drive.

Fire crews from throughout the area rushed to Dauphin Island Monday night to battle a massive blaze in a neighborhood.

"When I got to the top of the bridge it looked like the world was on fire," said Alabama Port Fire Chief Patrick Burns.

Fire officials said at around 9 p.m., a fire sparked at a home on Barcelona Drive, possibly from a fireplace.

"We got a call that Dauphin Island had a house on fire with a man down. I called and found out it was the fire chief that was down," said Burns.

Firefighters said Dauphin Island Fire Chief Brad Cox was airlifted to USA Medical Center. As of 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, he was listed in critical condition. Two other firemen were also rushed to the hospital.

Crews from Dauphin Island, Fowl River, St. Elmo, Bayou La Batres and the Alabama Port responded to the scene.

Strong winds made it very difficult to battle the blaze. In all, four homes were destroyed in the fire.

It took firefighters several hours to get the blaze under control.

There’s no word yet on the condition of the other two firemen
