A Chicago firefighter was hurt this morning when a deck collapsed beneath him at the site of an apartment fire in the South Side’s Englewood neighborhood. The firefighter was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for a leg injury, said CFD’s Larry Langford.
The firefighter hurt his leg "as the deck (gave way) and he started to fall," Langford said, adding that he started falling from the second-floor landing. But other firefighters prevented the injured one from falling to the ground. "He started to go through and they grabbed him," Langford said.
The fire started about 11:45 a.m. in the vacant, multi-unit apartment building in the 6300 block of South Ada Street. Langford said flames were visible on all three floors of the building, but he could not say where the fire started.
The fire was put out within 45 minutes and did not spread to any neighboring buildings. No one else was hurt. The Fire Department’s office of fire investigation was trying to determine the cause of the blaze this afternoon.
