Officers first spotted the stolen vehicle, a Nissan Pathfinder, at about 10:15 p.m. near Boren Avenue and James Street, and attempted to pull it over.

But the driver of the SUV accelerated and ran a stop sign at 9th Avenue and Jefferson Street, then collided with an ambulance that was enroute to Harborview Medical Center with a patient.

The stolen SUV then took off from the crash scene, went up on the sidewalk, ran over a sign and struck a building pillar near the emergency room entrance to Harborview.

The 17-year-old driver of the SUV was arrested and booked into the Youth Service Center for investigation of auto theft, attempting to elude police and hit-and-run – all felony charges. The suspect may face other lesser charges as well.

Two occupants of the ambulance – a medic and a friend of the patient’s – sustained minor injuries in the collision and were treated at Harborview.
