VA LODD Update, MD, MA, PA, IL Close Calls, FREE Training (The Secret List)

Hey…

We have some additional information related to yesterdays tragic Dale City Firefighter trainee LODD in Prince William County. Veteran EMT Cecilia Turnbough was a student as part of an entry level Firefighter certification class. The training involved maneuvering through a maze. Training was conducted with no smoke or fire but during the training, EMT Turnbough experienced a medical emergency and subsequently passed away. Here are all the details from Dave Statter:

Our condolences to her family, friends and the members of PWFR & the DCVFD. Cecilia was 42 years old, was an 8 year EMT with DCVFD and had recently begun training to expand her capabilities to include firefighting.

YESTERDAYS CLOSE CALL IN BALTIMORE COUNTY:

Yesterday at around 06:30 a structure assignment was dispatched for a dwelling fire. A one alarm assignment of a reported 5 Engines staffed with 4 FF’s, 1 Truck staffed with 4 FF’s, 1 BC, 1 Medic, 1 EMS Supervisor responded. Preliminary reports are that the first engine had a 2 story single family dwelling with smoke showing. Within about 3 minutes, the balance of the assignment arrived. 2 engine crews were operating inside advancing a line and conducting their primary search. About 8 minutes into the fire a Lt. and FF from Engine Co. 3 fell through the stairway into the basement. The Lt. provided a MAYDAY with LUNAR

[Location (where are you?) Unit (Which company?) Name (Who are you?) Assignment (What was your assignment) Resources (needed to help you?) ]….advising that he was OK but needed a ladder to exit the basement. The FF also attempted to issue a MAYDAY but was covered by radio traffic from the original MAYDAY. Within minutes both were assisted from the dwelling by other companies. Both suffered minor injuries and were transported and released. Good news from Baltimore County and….

Did you NOTICE the firefighting staffing they had on the above 1st alarm assignment? Not only does it take adequate staffing to do the job in a safer and more timely basis, but if we get in trouble, it takes staffing (who must be on the scene from the start) to help us out of trouble. But you knew that.

FIREFIGHTER INJURED THIS MORNING IN ILLINOIS:

An Illinois Firefighter was apparently pretty seriously injured this morning while operating at a fire that gutted a home in the Roselle FPD. Responding crews found the occupants had already safely gotten out but the attached garage was well off and it spread into the main dwelling. The one firefighter was injured and taken by an ALS unit. More details to follow as needed.

Take Care-BE CAREFUL.
