COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — A driver suspected of fatally hitting a Shelby firefighter on Interstate 80 in western Iowa has been ticketed for driving without proper registration.
The firefighter, Michael Collins, was hit last September while directing traffic at an earlier accident near the Shelby exit in Pottawattamie County. The Iowa State Patrol says a car driven by 44-year-old David Thies, of Ames, went around other vehicles that had slowed down and hit Collins.
Court records show Thies was ticketed in January and ordered to pay a fine and court costs totaling $127.
County Attorney Matt Wilber says an overtly reckless act, such as drunken driving, is necessary for a charge like vehicular homicide to be filed, and there was none.
