TULSA, Okla. —

Tulsa police say a hay bale on the highway led to an accident in which an ambulance hit a guard rail and flipped end over end, landing back on its wheels.

It happened shortly before 6:00 p.m. on U.S. 169 at the junction with 46th Street North.

Police Capt. Dave Roberts told KRMG that a good Samaritan had stopped and was attempting to move the hay bale off the highway when the wreck occurred.

The driver either hit the bale or swerved to miss it; traffic investigators had not determined the exact sequence of events at the time of this writing.

Two crew members from Oologah-Talala Emergency Medical Services  and the patient they were transporting were all taken to area hospitals following the wreck. Police say none of their injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

It happened at a bad spot on the highway, Capt. Roberts said, because of a hill and a curve of the roadway.

“People were just zipping by, they couldn’t see it until it was too late,” Roberts said.

He told KRMG that if the person who lost the hay bale was identified, they could be cited for failing to secure a load.

No other vehicles were involved. Police blocked all but one southbound lane on U.S. 169 and one westbound lane on 46th St. North while clearing the scene.
