2 BOSTON FF SUFFER INJURIES AT BUILDING FIRE

A four-alarm fire in Brighton this morning destroyed four businesses, in a blaze that blanketed the area with thick smoke, caused flooding on nearby streets, and injured at least two firefighters.

At its peak, the early-morning fire drew more than 100 Boston firefighters. Early this afternoon, engine and ladder companies were still pouring water and flame-retardant foam on the block of one-story businesses at the corner of Chestnut Hill Avenue and Embassy Road.

Two firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries, said Steve MacDonald, a Fire Department spokesman. One firefighter injured his eye and shoulder, MacDonald said; an official on the scene said the other slipped and fell on ice. Both were transported to a hospital.

The fire is said to have started in a pizza shop, Bocco Buono, said Deputy Fire Chief Robert Calobrisi. It was unclear what caused it, he said.

“There was [later] an explosion in the middle building, a janitorial supply place,” Calobrisi said this morning at the scene. “I’m worried about collapse right now.”
