3 injured in Corbin crash – Kentucky

CORBIN — By Becky Killian / Managing Editor

Three people were injured Sunday in a crash in Corbin involving an ambulance, according to Corbin Police Sgt. James Miller.

The crash happened just before 6 p.m. as Patsy Brown, of Barbourville, drove a Knox County Ambulance south on Kentucky Avenue. Miller said the ambulance, which was transporting a patient, had its lights and siren activated. As the ambulance drove through a red light at the intersection of 5th Street, it was struck by an eastbound 2010 Chevrolet Impala driven by Robert A. Walker, of Corbin.

The impact knocked the ambulance on its side. Brown had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Corbin Fire Department, according to Knox County EMS Director Gerald Baker.

Brown, EMT Shereen Reynolds, of Barbourville, and the patient, Donna Phipps, were transported to Baptist Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, Miller said. The three were treated and released, Baker said.

Two Whitley County ambulances and one Knox County ambulance responded to the crash.

Walker wasn’t injured, Miller said.

Baker, who said he is grateful to the emergency rescuers who responded, said it hasn’t been determined yet if the ambulance is totaled. He said the vehicle did suffer “severe” damage to both sides.

According to the police report, a contributing factor to the crash was the Central Baptist Church building at the intersection since it obstructed the view from both streets.
