CAR SLAMS INTO NY FIREHOUSE

One person was rushed to the hospital Monday morning around 12:30am after he crashed his car into the front of Main-Transit Fire Station 1 on Main Street, ripping down 3 of the 6 fire station bay doors and causing part of the structure’s brickwork to come tumbling down.

Main-Transit Firefighters used hydraulic rescue tools to extricate a 51 yr old male from Buffalo. The male was taken to Erie County Medical Center by Twin City Ambulance with multiple injuries. 3 of the 6 fire trucks were damaged as well as support columns, brick pillars, roof structure and the front glass bay doors.

Fire Chief Jon Kemp commanded 40 Main-Transit firefighters and reported no firefighter injuries. Fire Chief Kemp is assessing the damage estimate but it is expected to be several hundred thousand dollars. The Main-Transit Fire Department is still in service and has already responded to 2 additional calls while the fire station was being shored up. The Amherst Police Department Accident Investigation unit is investigating the cause of the early morning crash.

According to Lt. Chris Meyer of the Amherst Police Department, the 51 yr old male driver of the vehicle from Buffalo had to be extricated from the wreckage of his late-model Buick LeSabre and was taken to ECMC with serious injuries.

Main-Transit Fire Department was assisted by the Amherst Central Fire Alarm Office, Amherst Police, Amherst Fire Inspector Rick Andrews, Amherst Building Inspector Doug Gesel, Amherst Building Commissioner Thomas Ketchum, Amherst Highway Department, Amherst Highway Superintendent Robert Anderson, Twin City Ambulance and Eveready Emergency Enclosures.
