Witnesses: Woman in ambulance crash had no control – Oregon

BEAVERTON, Ore — A Beaverton couple that witnessed a crash between an ambulance and minivan has come forward.  They said the driver of the minivan had no control over what was happening.

Ray Steele and Denise Campbell were at a stoplight when 51-year-old Beth Caulfield came barreling toward them in her minivan.

"All of a sudden this van comes screaming by us," said Campbell.

"I turned and what I saw was the expression of a terrified person who had no control over what was happening in her life," Steele added.

According to the couple, Caulfield could have hit them but did not.

"I sincerely feel that she saw us and did everything she could to go around us cause she knew if she hit us we would’ve been dead," said Campbell.

Moments later Caulfield slammed into an ambulance with two paramedics and a patient inside.  They escaped serious injury, but Caulfield did not.  As of Friday night she was listed in critical condition at OHSU.

"As fast as she was going it was only a matter of time before she was going to hit something," said Campbell.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that a medical or mechanical issue caused the crash which Steele and Campbell believe is the case.  They also think things could have ended a lot worse.

"To me the woman is a hero," said Campbell.
