FIREFIGHTER HURT IN TANKER ROLLOVER AND CRASH

A Rio Vista firefighter suffered injuries last Thursday afternoon after the tanker truck he was driving rolled over several times.

A CareFlite ambulance transported Josh Cofin to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne where he was treated and released.

The accident occurred about 6:15 p.m. on Farm-to-Market Road 916 near the Nolan River bridge.

Cofin was responding to a mutual aid call to assist the Bono Volunteer Fire Department on a grass fire near FM 1434.

"There’s no real shoulders on that road," Rio Vista Chief Gail Hutchison said. "A couple of oncoming cars scooted over to get out of his way, as they’re supposed to do. He eased over a bit too and the wheels dropped off the road. He tried to pull back on but the truck rolled over.

"It’s one of those things you hate to see happen, but there’s nothing you can do about it."

The rollover totaled the truck, which is about eight months old.

Initial reports to dispatch at the Johnson County Emergency Services District No. 1 indicated that Cofin was trapped in the truck. Cofin managed to extricate himself from the truck before rescue workers arrived.
